Selective Intimidation, Terrorism - Alive and Well!

Throughout history many regimes used brutal tactics to control and manipulate populations, either their own or someone elses. The tactic is based on fear and intimidation regardless of degree.

If things are learned from nature... then "Law of the jungle" fits the bill.

Fear and intimidation was a common form of population control, it's adherents ranged from the school yard bully boy to the highest ranking elitist leadership.

The tendency is probably stoked by the inclination of the perpetrators to be of psychopathic tendency.

Left unchecked these animalistic intellect despots wreak untold misery and carnage across the populations they invariably subjugate.

So prevalent was the phenomena of psychopathic solutions to elicit compliance to imposed "rules" of societal behaviour... a specific term was coined for the practitioners of it.

The thought being of course, civilized governance should not be predicated upon fear and intimidation of its "subjects," democratic principles should.

One could hardly disagree unless one has a penchant for "rule by fear."
The word "terrorism" was first recorded in English-language dictionaries in 1798 as meaning "systematic use of terror as a policy"
This word and its definition sums up succinctly the disease to be dealt with.

Thank goodness the world has evolved into a much kinder and gentler place since 1798, we still experience isolated incidents labeled as terrorism, but the word is almost always reserved for small factions and individuals who practice fear and intimidation to make a point, or to coerce others into supporting their particular manifesto.

But wait...

Has much really changed since 1798?

Do we still routinely encounter blatant use of fear and intimidation used to suppress, motivate, influence or even totally subjugate entire populations or selective portions thereof?

I would say... "Certainly".

Evidence around the globe points to an unfettered use of fear and intimidation either physically, through brute force or indirectly through veiled threats and targeted harassment.

In fact one could be forgiven for thinking fear and intimidation is the system, rather than any other form such as appealing to folks better sensibilities to support and comply with acceptable societal standards.

Mostly the view from the sidelines is one of perpetual unfettered application of fear and intimidation to maintain control, this is currently evident in topical headlines.

Perhaps we need to lower our expectations and admit the adages such as "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar." Are simply platitude. Elitist power mongers certainly seem to disprove any notion of rule by benevolence, fairness and equity and mostly resort to threat or violence, their agendas do not reflect the preferences of their constituents.

The very foundations of sovereign citizens rights are mocked and disregarded, laws are routinely violated without prosecution and citizens are positioned as state threats not valued assets.

Somehow elected governance has reversed the relationship role and rather than serve public better interests they strive diligently to erode them, there seems to be no recourse for common folk!

In 2013, We indeed appear to be faced with a chronic application of systematic use of fear as a policy, which according to the dictionary is something called "terrorism."

Nowhere in the definition of "democracy" can I find any mention of fear or intimidation as a supporting strategy or incentive for managing governance on behalf of its constituents.

When a governing body routinely employs secretive mechanisms to identify populous thinking and attitudes, then persecutes and intimidates folks who disagree with them using agencies of the peoples to administer intimidation and penalty... then "democracy" converts from a defined ideal and becomes an illusion.

These practices and even worse... absolutely contravene any semblance of democratic ideal, these behaviours are inconceivable and cannot ever be justified no matter how warped the rational.

Perhaps it is time to face up to current "reality"... and stop yammering about injustice and heavy handed governance, perhaps it is what it is... and if it is not desirable for the majority... needs to be solved.

Fixing seems out of the question, replacement seems called for.

But how does one do that without democracy in place?

It has nothing to do with left or right... the strategy of bullying knows no bounds.

Women and children overboard

It's the  Catch-22  of clinical trials: to protect pregnant women and children from the risks of untested drugs....we don't test drugs adequately for them. In the last few decades , we've been more concerned about the harms of research than of inadequately tested treatments for everyone, in fact. But for "vulnerable populations,"  like pregnant women and children, the default was to exclude them. And just in case any women might be, or might become, pregnant, it was often easier just to exclude us all from trials. It got so bad, that by the late 1990s, the FDA realized regulations and more for pregnant women - and women generally - had to change. The NIH (National Institutes of Health) took action too. And so few drugs had enough safety and efficacy information for children that, even in official circles, children were being called "therapeutic orphans."  Action began on that, too. There is still a long way to go. But this month there was a sign that

Not a word was spoken (but many were learned)

Video is often used in the EFL classroom for listening comprehension activities, facilitating discussions and, of course, language work. But how can you exploit silent films without any language in them? Since developing learners' linguistic resources should be our primary goal (well, at least the blogger behind the blog thinks so), here are four suggestions on how language (grammar and vocabulary) can be generated from silent clips. Split-viewing Split-viewing is an information gap activity where the class is split into groups with one group facing the screen and the other with their back to the screen. The ones facing the screen than report on what they have seen - this can be done WHILE as well as AFTER they watch. Alternatively, students who are not watching (the ones sitting with their backs to the screen) can be send out of the classroom and come up with a list of the questions to ask the 'watching group'. This works particularly well with action or crime scenes with
