2011 – Humanity Enters Uncharted Waters

Occasionally I am asked why 2011 is different than other historic periods of upheaval and why should we consider it to be unique?

After all, I am told, humanity has bobbled along regardless of prevailing periods of catastrophic impacts.

For me 2011 represents a unique period in human history because there are far more of us and we almost all have access to instant information apprising us of what is happening anywhere in the world.

This fact alone adds a dimension never before experienced by humanity as a whole and it most certainly introduces a “wild-factor” element generating an effect I would call our mass global conscience, a palpable driver of human reaction and activity. Since this has never been experienced before no one knows what outcomes a mass coordinated global conscious may invoke, a definite unique factor when assessing probabilities for 2011.

It is likely that human perspectives have entered a new realm of cognizance and probably an era of some form of mental shifting and possible degraded mental stability--could this be a threat in and of itself?

Where are we going in 2011?
Weaker global growth is expected in 2011 and 2012, There will be no quick fix for economic problems in advanced countries, Developing country growth remains the main driver of the global recovery… The global recovery started to falter in mid-2010, Slower economic growth is expected in the United States, Europe and Japan, Developing country growth is also expected  to moderate during  2011-2012.
This assessment was made before the ring of fire taught us that locating  nuclear reactors within it amounts to insanity... and before seven or eight strategic economic middle eastern and now north African countries erupted into civil war or disobedience...

Who knows where 2011 will take us in the final analysis?

Many great changes, upheaval and calamity have been experienced by our planet and its inhabitants throughout the ages, however it is certain that groups of humans experiencing various disruptive events could not have known the extent of, or the repercussions of, or even fathomed why they occurred, survival would have been a personal, immediate and local reaction bound by extremely limited coping skills and without accurate information about them...  they were experienced as sudden events rather than an anticipated process, a benefit we have today.

Today, in contrast much of the world population can literally watch as other regions of the world undergo extreme trauma, be it socioeconomic, political or natural disaster. This difference percolates another distinct feature of 2011 – an instant global stress upon collective psyche and a precursor of what might soon be in store for individuals’ located miles away from the unfolding horrors. It is as though we have been separated into factions... the audience and the performers.

This leads to another unique feature of 2011, the advent of what I term “entertainment news.”

If you happen to be unaffected by the horrendous wide-spread upheavals of 2011, or only marginally so at present…  you are able to watch entertainment news outlets pumping nonstop dramatic content at you be it of the victims of economic meltdown, political unrest, war-like invasion, flood, earthquake, tsunami , oil spill and a myriad of other horrendous life altering or destroying  events under the guise of “news”--while at the same time shamelessly inundating you with hard and soft sell advertising, all delivered by grinning, superficial, highly groomed, high maintenance and privileged imbeciles whose sole mission seems to be creating the illusion that all is fun and frivolous and that somehow all the pain, suffering and disruption is a trivial component of their "show."

How WRONG is that?

For the situational aware who may have a penchant for personal and family safety… it may be a good time to take stock of the “mentality” developing during 2011. It seems support from authorities in times of crisis is less than reliable, the word of authorities is unreliable and their level of concern for you is undesirable.

Let factual results guide your conclusions, your own council in these matters is paramount.

Gear up for accelerating deterioration of everything and above all anticipate looming shortages of essential goods, services and products. Unfortunately, it may be your immediate neighbour you need fear most as global disintegration of climate, economics and prospects spirals ever more out of control, if you are not a victim yet, it seems highly likely you will be, if not sooner… then later, chaos is getting worse, not better.

Preparation for bad consequence…  at least mentally…  if not logistically--is a far better response than being afraid.

In any event... 2011 is definitely shaping up to be an unprecedented period of human existence, a time when personal, prudent and well-considered preparation should prevail, self-help is the only reliable kind available.

Stay tuned...

Women and children overboard

It's the  Catch-22  of clinical trials: to protect pregnant women and children from the risks of untested drugs....we don't test drugs adequately for them. In the last few decades , we've been more concerned about the harms of research than of inadequately tested treatments for everyone, in fact. But for "vulnerable populations,"  like pregnant women and children, the default was to exclude them. And just in case any women might be, or might become, pregnant, it was often easier just to exclude us all from trials. It got so bad, that by the late 1990s, the FDA realized regulations and more for pregnant women - and women generally - had to change. The NIH (National Institutes of Health) took action too. And so few drugs had enough safety and efficacy information for children that, even in official circles, children were being called "therapeutic orphans."  Action began on that, too. There is still a long way to go. But this month there was a sign that

Not a word was spoken (but many were learned)

Video is often used in the EFL classroom for listening comprehension activities, facilitating discussions and, of course, language work. But how can you exploit silent films without any language in them? Since developing learners' linguistic resources should be our primary goal (well, at least the blogger behind the blog thinks so), here are four suggestions on how language (grammar and vocabulary) can be generated from silent clips. Split-viewing Split-viewing is an information gap activity where the class is split into groups with one group facing the screen and the other with their back to the screen. The ones facing the screen than report on what they have seen - this can be done WHILE as well as AFTER they watch. Alternatively, students who are not watching (the ones sitting with their backs to the screen) can be send out of the classroom and come up with a list of the questions to ask the 'watching group'. This works particularly well with action or crime scenes with
